eSIMs are easy to activate on your device, without the need for physically interacting with SIM cards. They also allow you to use a physical SIM at the same time – namely, your local line. Travel eSIMs are especially useful as you can acquire them digitally right before you travel, thus eliminating the need for individual SIMs or phones for your travel destination. You can also easily switch phones by registering your new device with your cellular network provider!
How do eSIMs work?
The way an eSIM works is that when you purchase one from a mobile network provider, you are sent a QR code via email, which you can scan and use to install a connection onto your phone. In other words, it is simply the virtual form of a SIM card, which you can easily install on your phone!

Local Carriers
Viettel

Viettel is owned by the Ministry of Defense and thus the Vietnamese army. It’s the current market leader in Vietnam, providing network services to about 40% of the population.
It provides the best coverage in remote places even on 3G. 4G/LTE was officially launched in April 2017 on 1800 MHz (B3) to over 25,000 base stations in almost 95% of the country, allowing us to attribute the best 4G/LTE coverage to Viettel for now.
Rural Areas
As prices don’t differ too much between the 3 major operators, Viettel should be your first choice when it comes to service in rural areas.
SIM cards are available at the airports and lots of shops in town. Additionally, recharge cards are widely available in small shops and on the sidewalks. Your best option is to visit a Viettel store in a larger city. The staff are able to communicate in some English and they prepare everything for you, including cutting the card to a nano SIM. SIM cards are around 50,000-60,000 VND.

It holds a market share of 30% and is the local partner of Vodafone. It provides great coverage and speed throughout the country. 4G/LTE was initially launched on Phu Quoc island in 2016, and is currently rolled out nationwide.

Mobifone
Mobifone is the 3rd largest provider in the country, holding an 18% market share. It is currently occupied in the process of privatization. Speeds and coverage may be good in the city centers and around the coast, but are often patchy in the mountains.
Since 2016, it became possible to travel throughout the entire country in the Vinaphone network with a Mobifone prepaid SIM. Unfortunately, this seems to have ended in May 2018.
Mobifone’s 4G was launched in 2016 in Hanoi, Da Nang and HCMC on 1800 and 2600 MHz (Band 3,7) and is available as a prepaid plan without surcharge. It has been rolled out nationwide and reached 95% of the population at the end of 2019.

eSIM2Fly Roaming SIM
So how does a roaming eSIM compare with local eSIMs?
Local SIMs charge users about $2.33 per GB. The price per GB on SIM2Fly is $3.10 per GB on the first package and then $2.50 for add-on packages. This makes the eSIM2Fly roaming SIM competitive with the local eSIMs in price per GB.
